What to assess before moving a file server to the cloud

Moving a file server is rarely “just storage”. Permissions, path depth, applications, bandwidth and retention usually decide success.

Assess before you choose a destination

• Data volume and growth
• Share structure and path length
• NTFS or equivalent permission complexity
• Applications that open files by UNC path
• Identity and access model
• Upload bandwidth and change windows
• Retention, archive and legal holds
• User impact and support readiness

Destination follows requirements

Azure Files, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Blob Storage or another platform may each be right — or wrong — depending on access patterns and governance needs.
