What to assess before moving a file server to the cloud
Moving a file server is rarely “just storage”. Permissions, path depth, applications, bandwidth and retention usually decide success.
Assess before you choose a destination
- Data volume and growth
- Share structure and path length
- NTFS or equivalent permission complexity
- Applications that open files by UNC path
- Identity and access model
- Upload bandwidth and change windows
- Retention, archive and legal holds
- User impact and support readiness
Destination follows requirements
Azure Files, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Blob Storage or another platform may each be right — or wrong — depending on access patterns and governance needs.
A discovery assessment creates a structured basis for planning. It should not pretend to be an automatic fixed quote.
